I know there are some female viewers and readers out there who are sick and tired of women being portrayed as damsels in distress or shrilly, shallow daft bimbos who only care about men, money and fashion. Okay ladies and girls, here are some female characters who really are positive female role models from fiction and media. This is Part 1:

1.) Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds

She is one female character that shows computing and technology is not just for the guys only. Besides being tech-savvy with a penchant for online games like MMPORG and her ability to hack, Penelope (portrayed by Kirsten Vangsness) is also a technician analyst for the BAU (Behavioural Analysis Unit) in Criminal Minds. She maybe fun-loving and renowned for her flamboyance when it comes to her ever-changing fashionable eye glasses and hair dos, but you cannot help but relate to her easily especially if you happen to be a tech-savvy or technology-loving chick.

2.) Kim Yoon Hee from Sungkyunkwan Scandal

Sungkyunkwan Scandal is what I describe as Mulan meets the Joseon Dynasty meets Korean soap drama: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Sungkyunkwan_Scandal . In case you don’t know who is Kim Yoon Hee (portrayed by Park Min Young), she is a girl who is hungry for learning and is ahead of her time in an era where education for females was frowned upon. Like Mulan, she disguised herself as a boy and entered a school (in those days, schools were reserved for males only) under her younger brother’s name, Kim Yoon Shik, to allow her to support him. Determined, driven, brave and resourceful, she is not afraid of a challenge and would never back down when it comes to competing against the boys.Yes, she also will not let any obstacle in life from getting in her way just because she is a girl.

3.) Hermoine Granger from Harry Potter (both the books and movies)

The name sure rings a bell if you and other Harry Potter fans read the books and watch Emma Watson step into the shoes of this Hogwarts student since we entered the early 2000’s. She is brainy, knowledgeable  and sometimes can be bossy and have her occasional outbursts. But do not let the bossiness and occasional outbursts fool you because she is strong, independent, loyal, caring, courageous, resourceful and always fighting for the greater good.

4.) Eowyn from Lord of the Rings (both the book and movies)

Witch King: You fool. No man can kill me. Die now.

Eowyn: I am no man.

Do these lines sound familiar to you? If they are, you happen to have seen or read it from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King when Eowyn slayed the one-that-cannot-be-slain-by-a-man. Despite being beautiful, Eowyn (portrayed by Australian actress Miranda Otto) is no damsel in distress. She is strong-willed, independent and kind. Besides caring for her uncle the king, she can wield a sword, don an armour and never backs down from a battle worth fighting out.Seriously, how cool is that?

5.) Dr Temperance Brennan from the tv hit series Bones

Don’t let her lack of social skills and her brutal honesty turn you off. Despite her social ineptitude, Dr Temperance “Bones” Brennan (portrayed by Emily Deschanel) is a brilliant forensic anthropologist who won’t be easily frightened by skeletal remains of dead victims. That is not all, she is no damsel in distress where she does a few martial art moves that leaves a baddie earning some broken bones or bruises. Dr. Brennan is independent, resourceful and determined when it comes to seeking out justice for the dead victims.

6.) Gu Mi Ho (sometimes known as Mi Ho) from My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox

To those who have no idea what is My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Girlfriend_is_a_Nine-Tailed_Fox , the character, Gu Mi Ho, is one title character worth watching from start to end. Mi Ho (portrayed by Korean actress Shin Min Ah) is gumiho (a legendary nine-tailed fox well-known in Korean folklore) who is endowed with ethereal beauty, superhuman abilities and her penchant for beef morning, afternoon and night. She can show a few mean people that she means business and she is very perceptive that she can tell who is taking advantage of others. While mortals crave for immortality and life without any hardwork, Mi Ho yearns to be human with a normal life even if it means giving up her fox-like superhuman abilities and eternal life all for love. Mi Ho is not only innocent and cute but also she is loyal, kind, and also determined to be loved because she can love and show what it means to be human.

That is all for Part 1 and stay tuned for Part 2 when I am back with more. Anyway, what says you about this? If you think you know of other positive female role models in fiction and media, do say who it is and explain why.
